Programme:

Understanding Young People’s Experiences of Sexual Harm: Supporting Students

Update:

CARA (Centre for Action on Rape and Abuse, Essex) and ICENA (a non-profit social enterprise offering training and consultancy covering sexual discrimination and violence) in collaboration with young survivors in Essex, have published five animated videos to support professionals working with children and young people to understand the impacts of sexual violence.

Action Required:

Programme:

The GCSE disadvantage gap may not have increased much (if at all) since 2019

Update:

On 26 August FFT Education Data Lab published preliminary analysis of 2022 GCSE data from over 1,000 state-funded secondary schools covering 174,000 pupils, roughly a third of the national cohort, and concluded that the GCSE disadvantage gap may not have increased much (if at all) since 2019.

Action Required:

Internships Work

Update:

Internships Work is funded by the DfE and it is designed to support more young people with additional needs to have greater choice and control over their future, opening up opportunities that prepare them for adult life and independent living.

Action Required:

The project is designed and delivered by NDTiBASE and DFN Project SEARCH

It is an ambitious three year programme to double the number of young people accessing supported internships and moving into paid jobs.  There will be support from the partners for Local Authorities across the region to further their development, a free training offer and a small grant to support activities.

Beyond Boundaries – Early Years Webinar from ISOS and LGA – Monday 10 October 2022 at 14:00

Update:

On Monday 10 October 2022 at 14:00 Jodie Reed, Director at Isos Partnership, will be talking through headlines of Beyond Boundaries, her new research on early years integration for London Councils. 

This online webinar is open to all Local Authorities across the country and their partners. Please book here.

Action Required:

The report explores what effective integration across early years services and systems look like and how to get there, drawing on insights from early years leaders, professionals and parents across the capital.  Jodie will talk us through some of the key problems and challenges identified by parents and professionals and 12 common enablers or ‘conditions of success’. These form the basis for a new self-evaluation tool for local authorities and their partners which will be launched shortly. There will be an opportunity to experiment with parts of the tool during the session, and to reflect and ask questions on the national recommendations within the report.

In celebration of Kinship Care Week (3-7 October 2022), SESLIP, supported by the Adoption and Special Guardianship Leadership Board, is launching a series of free Lunch and Learn sessions for practitioners and managers working with kinship carers and special guardians.

  • Lucy Peake, Chief Executive of Kinship, and a kinship carer on the design of information and support services, featuring kinship carers’ work with local authorities and the development of Kinship Compass, a new digital hub for kinship carers to find advice, information and peer support (launching late 2022)
  • Alex Leslie from TPXImpact and Carole Atkins from Bucks Special Guardians who will explain their approach to coproduction and the new Guardians’ Guide they have co-designed with Special Guardians.

Update:

Across the south east, the NHS has created seven Integrated Care Boards. The Board Members are now appointed, and we have a comprehensive list of local authority representation at Board level.

Completing social work chronologies: Practice Tool (2022)

Update:

On 25 August Research in Practice published Completing social work chronologies: Practice Tool (2022) to aid social workers with compiling and analysing chronologies.

Action Required:

Features include an overview of the process, practical tips on completing chronologies, and tools to promote reflection. 

This briefing is part of the Pre-proceedings and family justice hub, developed with the DfE Covid Recovery funding, in partnership with Essex County Council and regional leads across England.

On 1 September DfE published the updated version of Keeping Children Safe in Education

This guidance applies to all schools and colleges and is for headteachers, teachers, staff, governing bodies, proprietors and management committees

Family and its protective effect: Part 1 of the Independent Family Review

Action Required:

Findings include: there is substantial regional variation in families’ access to support services; 80% of adults who say they can rely on their family ‘a lot’ if they have a serious problem are satisfied with life overall, compared with 66% of those who can’t rely on their family a lot; and 66% of looked after children in England have come into care due to abuse or neglect.

Update:

On 6 September DfE published National Key stage 2 attainment statistics for 2021-22

Action Required:

The disadvantage gap has grown to its widest for 10 years and attainment was lower than in 2019, with only 43% of disadvantaged pupils reaching expected standards.
