Social Work England – registration renewal reminder – closes 30 NOVEMBER

Update:

On 30 November Social Work England‘s window for registration renewal closes. Applications for social workers to renew their registration are now open. Apply to renew

Action Required:

Before 30 November, social workers must:

  • submit an application to renew
  • record at least 2 pieces of CPD, including a peer reflection
  • pay their registration fee
  • make any safe and effective practice declarations

They’re also asking social workers to review or consider submitting their diversity data this year. This is optional but they encourage social workers to share this information to help them ensure their processes are fair.

ADCS: Safeguarding Pressures Phase 8 interim report

Update:

On 2 November ADCS published an interim report of the eighth iteration of its Safeguarding Pressures researchIt draws on data from 125 local authorities, covering 83% of England’s child population.

Action Required:

It provides an insight into the first two years of the pandemic, and shows that the impact of Covid-19 continues to be felt in children’s lives, local communities and in public services.

On 10 November Julie McCullochASCL Director of Policy published a blog The ‘Messy Middle Tier’: Part 1

Action Required:

It highlights why we need more clarity about who is responsible for what in the English education system in part 1 of her two-part blog on the ‘messy middle tier’.

Programme:

Ofsted thematic review of careers guidance

Update:

On 9 November Ofsted published Terms of reference: thematic review of careers guidance. The review will be published in autumn 2023.

Action Required:

The report will answer the following questions across schools and further education and skills providers:

  • How well do leaders fulfil their statutory duties to provide independent careers guidance; and ensure that careers education is of high quality?
  • To what extent do schools and further education and skills providers engage with stakeholders (such as employers, careers networks and other providers); and ensure that careers education contributes to local, regional and national opportunities and skills needs?
  • How does the curriculum help learners make informed choices about their future education, employment and training?

Girls Speak: Pushed Out Left Out report published

Action Required:

Key takeaways include:

  • Racial disparities and discrimination persist for girls’ school exclusions
  • Young mothers, already at risk of poverty, are at the sharpest end of cost-of-living crisis
  • Services unable to address an epidemic of mental health problems among girls and young women in their late teens and early twenties.
  • Girls in schools and pupil referral units don’t feel safe from sexual harassment

The Big Listen Research to help authorities in the South improve the recruitment and retention of Children’s Social Workers

Update:

SESLIP research to understand how we can better support children’s social workers in the region. The first part of this research is focus groups to explore how to attract and keep good social workers. The focus groups are for specific cohorts of staff (Managers, Social Workers, Agency Social Workers etc). Staff can book on the groups by following the links in this flyer

Action Requested: Please can you ask your managers to encourage your staff to book places on the focus groups in late Nov/early Dec

Information gathered at the focus groups and through the survey will be used to develop a South East Regional Work force strategy.

Programme:

Learning about neurodiversity at school (LEANS)

Update:

On 12 October Alyssa Alcorn of the University of Edinburgh gave a presentation on learning about neurodiveristy at school (LEANS) to the SE19 Joint SEND Strategic Conversation

Action Required:

LEANS is a free, downloadable programme for mainstream primary schools. It introduces pupils aged 8-11 to the concept of neurodiversity, and helps them explore how it impacts school experiences. It is a teacher-delivered resource for the whole class. More details here.

Characteristics of children in need 2022 now published

Update:

On 27 October DfE published Characteristics of children in need 2022. It revealed there are 404,310 children in need, up 4.1% from 2021 and up 3.9% from 2020. Highest number since 2018.

Urgent action to protect children with disabilities from abuse

Update:

On 26 October the Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel published a report investigating allegations of abuse at residential homes for disabled children and called for urgent action to protect those in similar circumstances. 

Action Required:

A national review into safeguarding children with disabilities and complex health needs has revealed serious failures at 3 residential special schools registered as children’s homes. The independent review looks at the experiences of 108 children and young adults living at Fullerton House, Wilsic Hall and Wheatley House, located in Doncaster and operated by the Hesley Group.
